I think each person has their own path they need to take. I write in such a very specific niche market that my only choices were to do it myself, or go to an e-publishing house and give them 60% or more of the profit of my work. I decided I'd rather foot the costs and keep all the profit for myself. :) I don't think it's for everyone, but I know enough romance authors who self-publish and do it successfully -- sometimes better than their traditionally published counterparts -- to feel that I have a very good chance of succeeding if I put the effort forth.
